Myths and Legends (a short history of Sod
Celtic) |
The founding of Sod Celtic was not indirectly linked to large volumes
of Guinness. There were four culprits involved with the initial set up. Colm
Fox, Conor Smith, Jim Muldowney and Graham O Connor. The first two are from
Skerries Co Dublin and the latter two from Thurles Co Tipperary. We met in the
Ould Sod pub, were enjoying the best Guinness in San Diego when after we had got
the compulsory political arguments out of the way, turned to football(soccer).
We were all keen to play some sport as the Gaelic football season didnt get
going until May. Sod Utd & Clan na Gael , the other Irish teams in town refused
us entry due to our lack of talent. I believe Colm came up with the original
idea of the club. It seemed a great idea. We talked until closing time and had
visions of a San Diego football empire in the making.
The next morning I wasnt as keen to get the club on its feet but Jim pushed
it. Anyway we talked , badgered and harassed anyone who knew anyone who could
kick a ball. They also had to hand over $100 for the privelege of playing. The
monumental first game was on Sunday 15th October 1995 at 8.30am Robb Field # 8
versus The Sting. Sod Celtics first game and first loss. What a team. What a
club! |
